Chapters are Busy Reactivating and Expanding
AFE's National Capital Chapter 168 in Washington, D.C. is welcoming an influx of new members and planning numerous programs.
The activity is due to new leadership by local officers, with support from the AFE staff.
Recently, chapter members toured The International Monetary Fund headquarters for an insider's look at operations of this high-tech, high-security facility frequented by global dignitaries. Soon, they'll learn about energy efficiency innovations at the Washington Nationals' ballpark.
Similar developments have been occurring in Kansas City and St. Louis, to name a few of the locations.
"We're seeing very impressive revitalization activities among many of our 100-plus chapters," CEO Laurence Gration, CEO, said. "Our trend toward more dynamic functioning at the grassroots level is beginning to pay off for members everywhere."
While AFE's national structure helps connect facilities professionals from all parts of the world, our chapters help them connect on a one-to-one basis with colleagues in their local communities.
Our chapters are well known for tours of fascinating buildings, for meetings that feature guest speakers with informative, "from the trenches" expertise, and for camaraderie that develops over activities such as golf tournaments, civic and charitable projects, boat trips, and dinners. Some chapters have special study sessions with members preparing to take the Certified Plant Engineer exam. Others have activities to raise scholarship money for students. Several represent AFE at regional trade shows, handing out promotional literature and answering questions the benefits of membership. Many operate their own newsletters and web sites.
In a handful of places, most notably California and Massachusetts, an AFE chapter "mentors" a student chapter on a college campus. Volunteers attended graduation ceremonies recently to congratulate our next generation of facilities engineers and managers.
Over everything from clambakes to Christmas parties, these people bonded by a common career interest become trusted friends.
Participating in a chapter leads to other good things. As an officer, you can develop valuable leadership and business skills. As part of a local network, you can be among the first to hear of job openings.
As Chairman Dan Bittel, CPE, says: when you belong to AFE support is all around you. "You are not alone."
